Book Review: Hilda and the Black Hound by Luke Pearson.

We adore books, did you know that? Of course you did! Well we've recently received another fantastic Flying Eye book, Hilda and the Black Hound by Luke Pearson, a wonderfully illustrated graphic novel for children (and adults!) from Flying Eye Books

The story follows Hilda as she embarks on an adventure when her mother signs her up to Sparrow Scouts. From kind deeds to building huts, Hilda and her scout buddies work tirelessly to complete their challenges. When they have a weekend at camp, Hilda runs into Tontu, a house spirit. With a hound rumoured to be scouring the town, Hilda and her new found friend might be the only ones who can figure out why the beast is there and where he came from…

I thought this book was amazing. George, Molly and I sat huddled together reading the words and absorbing the images. I love how we knit the story together with a mixture of illustrations and written word, overlapping between the two worlds of storytelling. It gives us a chance to exercise our imaginations and interpret the story in our own individual ways.

I loved the illustrations, from larger landscape scenes of camp to close up images of Hilda, they are bold, bright and full of expression and character.

The storyline is very sweet indeed, I love Hilda's natural intuition with the different creatures she meets. I think it offers children an insight into the world of difference, how we can easily pre-judge and misread things we see and hear, and how sometimes it takes someone with open eyes to open ours…

This book is simply magical.
