Make Summer Special With Pizza Express...

Summer is here and life feels so much brighter when the sun is shining; it's the perfect excuse to head out for a delicious family meal to soak up the sunshine and fill those bellies. We were recently invited to try out the summer menu at Pizza Express, and it was the perfect excuse to go for a sunny afternoon stroll as a family around Cardiff Bay before trying out their fantastic range of food.

Pizza Express is located across the way from Wales Millennium Centre, offering superb views of the Bay. We arrived for our allocated booking time and we were greeted by the very lovely Ilze. She showed us to our table (or should I say, George and Molly chose our table and we were lucky enough to be able to use it!) and handed us the menus. We were made to feel very welcome and there was no issue with our two crazy kids asking a zillion questions and watching the food being prepared in the open kitchen area…

Whilst we waited for our drinks to arrive George and Molly had fun with their chef hats and activity sheets!

We didn't have to wait long at all, and our first offering from their summer specials was a deliciously refreshing drink, Hugo St. Germain (£5.95). Made with Prosecco over ice, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, lemon and mint, it was refreshing, light absolutely delicious.

Whilst we sipped away at our lovely summer drink, we spent time checking out their amazing menu. What's great is that you don't have to eat pizza, there's plenty of other options available, from pasta to salad, there really is something for everyone. But I have to be honest and say, I'm not sure I'll ever understand anyone who doesn't love pizza!

They also have a fabulous children's menu and for £6.95 your little one can have a starter of Baked Dough Balls, a choice of a main (pizza/pasta/salad.) and a dessert and drinks start from 50p. To start, the children had dough balls and they come with some cucumber and tomato (Molly was very happy about this!) and Warren and I ordered Cod Crocchette (£6.30) and Dough Balls Doppio (£8.45).

We like to buy Pizza Express Dough Balls for our movie and pizza nights, but having them fresh was an awesome experience. They are so light and delicious and the Dough Balls Doppio comes with garlic butter, red pesto and green pesto, so I was basically in heaven. Although, to be truthful, George and Molly demolished their starters and then started eating ours! Warren's Cod Crocchette consisted of creamy smoked cod with mozzarella and a hint of jalapeños rolled in breadcrumbs and baked in the oven, with a helping of rocket, parsley and anchovy mayonnaise. He really enjoyed his starter, it was fresh and light and didn't take up too much room so he too could shared in some delicious dough ball love!

For our mains we had a mixture of pizza, pasta and a summer special. George opted for pepperoni pizza, Molly asked for plain pasta with parmesan, Warren chose their deliciously amazing Romana Zapparoli (£14.60) and I opted for their summer special Pollo Milanese (£11.95).

As you can see, the kiddiebops were super excited and impressed by the food, and they are quite fussy when it comes to eating out! I couldn't wait to see the restaurant version of Warren's Romana Zapparoli, after recently trying one from Waitrose. It's a delicious pizza inspired by Rome consisting of a larger, thinner and crispier base topped with chicken, hot soft 'nduja sausage, mozzarella, garlic oil and Gran Milano cheese, on smoky creamed corn, finished with red Roquito pearls and parsley. It's a stunning pizza and it looks almost (I said almost) too good to eat.

Obviously after I'd tasted Warren's delicious pizza it was time to try out my own main meal. Their Pollo Milanese consists of a warm breaded chicken breast with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese and roasted tomatoes, served with a side of pesto.

It looked divine and tasted even better (as you can see from my empty plate!). I thought the flavour combinations were impeccable and it was so light and summery I was left with a little room for dessert!

Molly opted for a yummy Claudi & Fin Mango Yoghurt Lolly and George chose their Piccolo Sundae. All children's meals come with a Bambinoccino (frothed milk with a sprinkling of chocolate), which is such fantastic value for money in my opinion.

I chose the delicious Chocolate Fondant 'PizzaExpress' for £6.50, it's a rich chocolate cake with a soft melting centre, served with vanilla ice cream, mint and a sprinkle of icing sugar. It was absolutely divine, and I couldn't get enough of it! But, of course, I had to share with my gorgeous Warren because that's what love is, right?

Warren's a big tiramisu lover, so he chose their Summer Tiramisu for £6.50. Made up of layers of ladyfingers, mascarpone cream, lashings of Vin Santo and sweet strawberry purée, it's the perfect end to a perfect summer's day.

We had a delightful evening at Pizza Express in Cardiff Bay, it was relaxing and welcoming, we were treated so kindly by Ilze and the food was so unbelievably mouth-wateringly delicious we cannot wait to go back!

They definitely have something special going on in their restaurants, with beautiful flavour combinations and a light and tasty selection of summer specials, you'd be crazy not to give them a whirl.

Disclosure: We received a complimentary meal in exchange for review. All opinions are 100%  honest and my own.
